Your first job: seven things to do before your first shift

Starting your first job is exciting and a little nerve-wracking. These steps help.
1. Get your SIN
You need a Social Insurance Number to be paid in Canada. You can apply online or at a Service Canada office.
2. Set up direct deposit
Most employers pay by direct deposit. Have your bank's void cheque or direct deposit form ready.
3. Confirm the details
Double-check your start time, where to go when you arrive, who to ask for, and what to wear.
4. Sort out transportation
Do a practice trip if you can, especially for early shifts. Know your backup route.
5. Bring ID and paperwork
Bring government ID and any certificates your employer asked for (Food Handler, WHMIS, First Aid).
6. Ask questions
Nobody expects you to know everything on day one. Asking good questions is a sign you care.
7. Keep track of your hours
Write down when you start and finish each shift so you can check your first pay stub.
